There are four alliance tokens in the game with crests representing the four religious orders. All tokens are color-coded and correspond to the same colors used for the orders. Depending on the game mode of play these chip tokens are used to indicate alliances and team play.
At the start of the game if tokens are supported by the mode of play, each player is issued a token representing their religious order. For example, if you are the player playing with the Franciscans, you get the green token with the Franciscan crest. If you enter an alliance with another player, you exchange your tokens and you place the other player's token on your home base. The other player will do the same with your token. You are now in an alliance and you play on the same side supporting each other against the other players in the game. When the alliance is broken, each player returns the token to its original owner.
Another way to use the tokens is in the teamwork mode to indicate which players are on the same team. There are no alliances in the teamwork mode. When using the alliance option, there has to be a minimum three players in the game. See the rules to learn everything about the alliance tokens.
